We Are Red Note Rehearsal Studios

We Put Musicians First

Red Note Rehearsal Studios is an hourly music rehearsal space on the border between Bushwick, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens.  With top-of-the-line equipment, knowledgeable staff, and low hourly rates, Red Note Rehearsal Studios offers the best possible opportunity for bands and artists to practice their craft in a comfortable, attentive, and affordable environment.

Our philosophy puts musicians first, and we are committed to supporting the incredibly prolific and diverse musical communities of Brooklyn and Queens.  We’re proud to offer not only top quality amps, drums, and PA systems, but also an ever-growing collection of effects pedals available for a small charge during rehearsal times, a library of instructional books, instruments for hourly rental, and any other equipment you might need.  The local community is what keeps our doors open, and we’re happy to support the artists who support us, so drop off some show fliers, ask us what gear you need to get that perfect tone, and check out our community and blog pages to see what else is going on.

In addition to our studio rooms, we have a music supply store, carrying strings, picks, pedals, and more.  Stop by to see what’s in stock, or take a look at our pedal inventory at our online store.  We carry new and used gear, so if you have any equipment you’re looking to get rid of, let us know!

Red Note Rehearsal Studios is owned and operated by Joe Mastracchio.  In addition to being a lifelong musician, Joe writes the Brooklyn-based heavy music blog The Bent Unit, books shows for local and touring artists, and spends his free time worshiping Frank Zappa.

Where are you located?

Red Note is located on the border between Bushwick, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens. This neighborhood represents a thriving community of musicians and artists, and we’re happy to support that community by providing a clean, comfortable, and affordable practice space.

The closest subway stops are the Halsey Street L stop, or the Myrtle-Wyckoff M/L stop. You can also take the B20 or B26 bus. There are also a few Citi Bike hubs located nearby, one being on Irving and Halsey and another on Norman and Wycoff.

The actual address is 1001 Irving Avenue, Ridgewood NY 11385. Click here to find us on google maps.

So….what is this place?

Red Note Rehearsal Studios is, well, a rehearsal studio.  Or, if you will, a practice space.  Or a practice studio.  Or a rehearsal space!  Whatever you want to call it.  Not to be confused with a recording studio (although you might certainly try recording here…more on that later).  It’s a place for full band practice, for individual practice, for working hard, playing hard, or any combination of the two.  Our rehearsal rooms are generally available for hourly rental and are great spaces for making music happen.

But we’re also more than just a rehearsal space.  We’re a cornucopia of musical resources, and we want to do whatever we can to help you do what you love, and maybe even get better at doing it.  Try out some new gear, peruse our library of instructional books, or just hang out and ask us about our favorite local venues.  We’re not business people – we’re musicians just like you.

What are your hours of operation?

We are generally open 10am-12am, 7 days a week, and are potentially flexible to book outside of those times based on our availability.  Advance notice of bookings is very much appreciated, and there are certain times when we’ll be closed (holidays etc), but other than that, don’t hesitate to call us as early or late as you want.

Keep in mind we have a 2 hour grace period. So you can’t book through our website under two hours notice you would need to call or text for these sessions.

What are your rates?

Currently, all 5 of our rehearsal rooms are available for the hourly rate of $20.  This includes use of all of the equipment contained within the room, including full 5 piece drum sets (cymbals, snare & hardware included), bass and guitar amps, and a PA system (includes 3 microphones, xlrs and stands). Make a booking now!

Large bands (6 or more individuals) we charge $30/hr.
Late night bookings 11pm-1am – we charge an additional $5/hr.

We offer discounted rates if you book during our off-peak hours M-F (10am-5pm).

Our discounted rates before 5pm (M-F) are as follows:

  • Solo rehearsal rate (1 person) of $10/hr
  • Duo rehearsal rate (two individuals) of $15/hr
  • Group rehearsal rate (three of more individuals) of $17/hr
  • No discounts for large groups (+6 people)

And lastly, we have ‘Day-Of’ discounts for artists if you book on the same day ~ during prime time. Meaning we offer our solo rate (1 person) for $10/hr, our duo rate (2 ppl) for $15/hr after 5pm if you call or text and the room is still available. You cannot book these day of discounts through the booking system prior to 5pm on the same day.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Life happens…we get it. People get sick or tied up (hey, it’s NEW YORK!) But we are also an operating business here, with real people. So we do have a 24 hour cancellation policy.

If you cannot make your reservation without 24 hours notice, we ask that you cover your reserved session.

Again, please understand that when you forget or cancel your reservation without giving us enough notice, we miss the opportunity to fill that appointment time with other artists that might’ve been looking to play at that time. And since the room is reserved for you personally, a Cancellation fee will apply if you cannot make it. We will be asking for a credit card to have on file.

– Less than 24 hour notice will result in a charge equal to 50% of the reserved room amount.

– “NO SHOWS” will be charged 100% of the reserved service amount.

Why was I charged a booking fee for my reservation?

To provide Red Note customers with a seamless online booking experience, we charge an additional 5% booking fee to the total reservation. The virtual booking fees are 100% refundable if you cancel your booking within our 24-hour cancellation period.

This charge helps cover the operational costs associated with the booking software and the fees for processing payments taken electronically. Charging a small booking fee also means that we can constantly invest in gear and repairs to make sure that you get the best experience when you jam with us at Red Note Rehearsal Studios.

Is there parking available?

We do not have a parking lot available for our customers. All we have for parking is street parking. Please look for parking along Irving Avenue, or check down Covert, Eldert and Halsey street for parking.

What is "prime time"?

Prime time for our studio is considered between 5pm-close Monday-Friday and then Saturday and Sunday all day and night. Prime time is just terminology to describe our busiest and most demanded time. After 5pm is when most people have off from work collectively and are looking to practice. We wouldn’t be able to discount your session when there would be other bands looking to get in at the full price.

How do those "day-of" discounts work?

The “day-of” discounts that we offer can be acquired if you book with us personally (phone or text) after prime time has begun (after 5pm M-F or anytime Saturday and Sunday). The idea behind the day of discounts is like some of those discounted travel websites where you’re able to get a reduced rate in our space assuming you wait to the last second. You wouldn’t be able to book a day-of discount at 9am for 7pm on the same day. It’s a bit of a gamble.

We want to give priority to all customers who want to reserve the space for their project in advance at the full hourly rate and then provide discounts if we have the space on the night of. We provide the off-peak discounts (before 5pm) available in advance M-F and then the day-of discounts as an affordable option for artists if it makes sense for them.

Can you smoke in the rehearsal rooms or the building?

No. Smoking is not allowed in the rehearsal rooms or inside the building. That includes the rooms, hallways, bathrooms and stairwells.

The building we are in has a strict no smoking policy. They have a 24/7 security monitoring system of the premises and if you are caught on camera smoking they will fine us over $100.

Please respect the building and our neighbors and take your smoking outside, which you can do out front.

How big are the rooms?

Our biggest rooms are the Audrey, Laura, and Norma rooms, which are roughly 11×15′, or 165 square feet. They are certainly big enough to fit an average sized band of 3-5 people, but we’ve had 7+ person bands or groups in the rooms before, so if you’re willing to get a bit cozy, it will work out!

The Denise room is 10’x15′ so a little tighter width but still good for 3-5people.

The Dale Cooper room is 10’x14′ feeling more squarish then the other three. This is best for small groups of 1-3 musicians. But groups 4-5 can work if you don’t mind squeezing in.

What equipment do you have?

All five of our rehearsal rooms have a full drum set (including cymbals and snare), at least two guitar amplifiers, a bass amp, a PA system (mixer, speakers and at least 3 microphones/XLR cables). Please refer to our rehearsal room page to see the specific gear in each room.

Pearl VBL Vision Birch kit with 22″ bass drum

Yamaha EMX512SC/A15 PA systems

Do you have a keyboard?

Yes!  We have a beautiful Yamaha CP40 STAGE 88-Key Graded Hammer Stage Piano and a Yamaha P71 keyboard (88 weighted keys).  Both are available for an hourly rental of $5/hr, if you or your group needs the keyboards rented please add it to your appointment during your online booking or let us know in advance. – check out our rehearsal page for more info on rooms and equipment.

Do you have guitars and basses or other equipment for hourly rental?

We currently have two Fender Squier stratocaster electric guitars, and a Squier P-Bass.  Both the guitars and bass are available for hourly rental at $5/hour.  For the drummer we can also provide a double kick pedal ($5/hr) or an additional snare or cymbal at $5/hr. Please let us know in advance if you’ll need to rent one during your rehearsal session.

Do drummers need to bring their own cymbals/snare/clutch/etc?

Nope – we’ve got everything!  But if you’re particular about these things, please feel free to bring any of your own equipment to supplement our kits.

So, you’re a music supply store too?

We sure are.  In addition to pedals, we carry strings, picks, straps, slides, drumsticks, cleaning/maintenance products, and more.

Do you have batteries?

In the oft-chance that your instrument or accessory requires a battery, we have batteries for sale in our office. We sell 9Volt batteries (for active guitars or stompboxes) at $5/each. We also have double A and triple A battery packs (2 pair) available for $5. We also have some CR2032 batteries available for tuners at $5/each.

Are you interested in buying my used gear?

Yes!  Let us know what you’d like to get rid of, and we’ll certainly consider it.

What else can I use the rooms for?

Anything within reason!  We’ve had actors, dancers, comedy troupes, voice lessons, drum lessons, guitar lessons, stand-up comics, film crews, music videos, interviews, business meetings and plenty more use the space for their own purposes.

If you need the room emptied for any such reason (equipment removed), give us a call and we’ll see if the studios will work for you. We charge an additional $25 to remove all the gear (amplifiers and drum-set) in the room on top of the hourly rental for the inconvenience.

We’re happy to help make it work and give you a good spot to do your thing.  For general use, typical rates would still apply – $20 base rate for groups, with the discounted off-peak (10am-5pm) rates available of $15 for two, or $10 for solo acts. Head over to our booking page to make a reservation.

Whats with the names of the studios?

We decided back in 2016 to theme our rehearsal rooms after the eerie early 90’s televsion show Twin Peaks. All the names you see for the rehearsal rooms (Audrey, Norma, Dale, Laura and Denise) are actually fictional characters from that TV show. So no, their won’t be anybody in the rehearsal room with you when you play your session.

The room theme helped as a way to locate our rooms or as a landmark since we are in a two story commercial space with over 80 other non-related studios.

What’s up with the pedals?

We maintain a nice library of effects pedals that we are quite proud of.  We are licensed retailers of a full line of Dunlop and MXR pedals, and also carry a number of pedals from smaller manufacturers, including Death by Audio, Earthquaker Devices, Dwarfcraft Devices, Humboldt Wood Pedals, Old Blood Noise Endeavors, Walrus Audio, and more.  Most of these pedals are available for sale, but we also encourage our customers to use their rehearsal time to try out pedals for $5/hr.  Come check out the collection, and try out a new tone or two!

Some of our pedals are also available for purchase at our online store.

What is your booking policy?

Just give us a call at (917) 676-1364, text or send us an email at rednotestudios@gmail.com, or go to our booking page to schedule your session.  We strongly encourage advance bookings to ensure that you’ll be able to book the space you want, when you want to book it.  We do not require a deposit for one-off bookings; simply pay on your way out.

We do offer discounted rates for anyone who books a total of 10 or more hours at the normal $20/hr rate.  In this case we will require payment up front, but it will ensure that you get the space you want, and at a lowered rate. The payment is non-refundable, however if you need to cancel a session, we’ll gladly help you reschedule it at a more convenient time, at no additional cost.

Are you a recording studio?

Technically, no, and there is sound bleed between rooms that prevents us from offering a completely isolated recording environment.  But there’s no reason you couldn’t use our practice space to do some tracking, demo some songs out, or even record an album!  Please reach out to us directly about recording at Red Note, and we’ll see how we can help with the process.  Just note that we are not able to offer in-depth assistance with audio engineering or room setup, nor are we able to supply recording equipment besides the basics.  If you feel comfortable using the rooms to record, then we encourage you to go ahead, but you should already have the equipment and experience necessary to run your own recording session.

Are the rooms soundproofed?

All of the Red Note Rehearsal Rooms have been given a soundproofed treatment. Most rooms use a blend of moving blankets and acoustic foams, along with bass traps along the corners of the rooms and some door soundproofing as well.

Unfortunately, we can occasionally have noisy neighbors, as we are not the only business or live music tenant in the building. If you are looking to play a quieter session, like folk, a cappella or jazz try to keep in mind that the corridor and neighboring rooms can be loudest during prime time (5pm-close) every night. So it might be best to book earlier in the day for more of a quieter experience.

Can you reschedule your reservation?

In the event, where you or your group cannot make your upcoming reservation but want to reschedule for another date or time in the week you’ll need to make your reschedled appointment request before our 24 hour cancellation window to avoid cancellation fees.

Again, cancelling and in this case rescheduling your reservation on the same day really screws up the booking calendar for the day or evening. When you move your reservation with little to no notice (under 24 hours) its just as detrimental as cancelling to the booking calendar on that given day.

With short notice, we may not be able to fill the room again during the vacant period, and we potentially missed artists prior to your initial reservation who would have wanted the room.

Please review our cancellation policy just above for more information.

How do I find your rehearsal studios?

To be honest, finding our rehearsal rooms can actually be challenging upon your first visit.
First off, we are located on 1001 Irving Avenue in a two story shared commercial space with multiple other tenants and businesses.

To enter the premises you’ll need to search for ‘Red Note’ on the touch screen call pad out front and select our contact so that we can buzz you in.
Once you’re inside the commercial space, you’ll want to go up the large two staircases just in the entry and then walk to the back left of the building to find your respective rehearsal room.
All of our rehearsal rooms have pictures of the Twin Peaks characters outside of the rooms.

Is the building handicap accessible?

Unfortunately, the building is not handicap accessible. When we moved into the two story commercial space in 2016 we were promised an elevator and were promised the elevator years after from our landlord, but it still has not been installed in our space yet. Sorry in advance.

Are the rooms temperature controlled?

Our rehearsal rooms all operate on a shared hvac duct down the same corridor. The rooms are usually set to Cool with air conditioning being preferred by most artists, however, from time to time the thermostate can be adjusted by other tenants in the building and cause our rooms to become warm or really cold. And sometimes it just can become non-operational from general wear and tear. Regardless, let us know if you are experiencing a temperature problem and we’ll try to address it to the best of our ability.

Is there wifi in the building?

For sure, once you’re inside the rehearsal rooms we have the wifi network & PW of the building printed on a small picture frame. The service if you are not on the building wifi can be unfavorable at times.

How come the booking software won't let me select the times I wanted?

If the booking software is not allowing you to select an available time it’s most likely because you selected a discounted session during a period where they aren’t available. For example, if you were trying to book a solo session from 7-9pm on Wednesday night the software won’t display any available times for then because this service isn’t available at that time. Solo sessions and duo sessions are only available before 5pm M-F.

You would need to select “Full Band Rehearsal” to book this type of session or text/call us for the day-of discount options.

Other common issues with the booking software is that you are trying to reserve just one hour for any of our group sessions. We have a minimum of 2 hours required to be booked for group projects.

Do you give refunds?

We issue refunds if you cancel your reservation before our 24 hour cancellation policy window. However, sometimes band practice doesn’t go as planned. Tensions between the bass player and drummer continue to build. Outside drama comes into the session. Work place stress carries into practice. We get it, we’ve seen it. But unfortunately, we don’t issue refunds for bad practice, as all sales are final.

Sometimes you might not have a good time at our spot. Maybe the neighbors are being way too loud and making it difficult to focus, or the last artist was really smelly. If something in our rooms was a cause for a bad session you have to communicate what’s bothering you, chances are we most likely have a solution available. If there’s absolutely nothing we can do, we will most likely discount your time, situation dependent.

How come the instrument I rented isn't in the room?

If the gear you reserved for your session is not in the room at your start time. You should either swing by our office (room #203) and visit our staff OR call/text us.

We are a small, small team. So mistakes happen and we can miss reservation notes. If you book or reserve an instrument on the same day during our off peak times (10am-5pm M-F) these are sessions that are vulnearble to missed gear. Keep in mind just because we are “open” doesn’t mean we have somebody on-site every single minute. We usually have staff onsite for our busiest times, which generally are later in the day.

Can I use the space for filming?

All networks or small film productions that would like to use our rooms for filming will not be eligible for our typical hourly rate. There will be a flat rate fee adjusted based on how long the shoot is. Generally speaking, film shoots usually require much more attention and time then expected. We need to reset the room and get it back to a space for our hourly artists.
